Confusable meanings

There are many words in English that are commonly confused. What do we mean by this?

 

We refer to words that are close in both form and meaning. Let’s have a look at a few examples:

 

fortuitous means ‘happening by chance‘ and fortunate means ‘happening by good chance‘.

 

regretable means ‘to be regretted‘ (adverb: regrettably) and regretful means ‘having regrets‘ (adverb: regretfully)

 

prevaricate means ‘to be evasive‘ and procrastinate means ‘to put off action‘ (they have different meanings and yet we can use either of them in many contexts.
